onwards varied between 19 and 24 and rose in 1921- 1922 to 29, with a correspondingly restricted entry in the earlier years. In 1920-1921 the entry rose to to 67 and in 1921-1922 exceeded 100, while the figures already given as to local examinations suggest a steady, and even rapid increase in the near future. For this tendency the steady improvement in the organization of secondary education is, no doubt, largely responsible, but it may fairly be claimed that it has arisen by no mere coincidence at a moment when, for the first time, the University can be judged by the character and by the success of its graduates. The main buildings were designed for 500 students, and, so far (with a number of students slightly exceeding 250) no pressure for accommodation is being felt, save in individual departments: growing Dumbers, indeed, pernit of the more economical organization of classes. The hostels, which are regarded as an essential feature of the life of the University, are, however, already full, and additional hostel accommodation will become urgently necessary in 1923. The University claims to have definitely won the sympathy of the Colony and of educational circles in the Far East: the retention of that sympathy will be aided by planning a programme of develop- ment well in advance.
